I just called him "mate"

2nd Nov 2007

Quite what Prince Charles must have thought but Britain's top female boxer  Jane Couch forgot the protocol and just chatted with the heir to the throne when she collected her MBE at Buckingham Palace.

"I was so nervous that I forgot that I was supposed to call him 'Your Majesty'.  Instead I just said hello mate ! " admitted Jane afterwards. "But he was killing himself laughing and at one point told me I was a bit unusual ! I offered to shake his hand and suggested I had better go because he had others to talk to, but he said he could talk to me all day.   As for my curtsy - well it is best forgotten !"

Jane returned home from London to a champagne reception at the Marriott Hotel in Bristol City Centre with a group of friends and several more media interviews. However, all she really wanted to do was go to bed because she had been up since 3am ready for the drive to London.  "It was a fantastic day" she told Sportuk.tv.

Jane Couch awarded M.B.E.

16 June 2007

Britain's best known women's boxer Jane Couch has been made an MBE in the Queen's Birthday Honours List which was published today. She received the news on the eve of her departure for the USA where she will bid to bring home the 6th World title of her professional career which now spans 14 years.

"I am gob-smacked," Jane told Sportuk.tv. "For years you wonder if anyone cares about you. I've flown all around the world and appeared on some of the biggest shows but to be honoured by the Queen like this is unbelievable. I'm so proud"

Next Wednesday Jane will face up to Jaime Clampitt for the IWBF super lightweight title at the Foxwoods Resort Casino in Connecticut where she beat the same opponent exactly two years ago. Thanks to Continental Airlines she has been able to re-scheduled her flight to the States to allow her time to celebrate her MBE.

"I am really grateful that they managed to switch the flights because this is a special time for me.

"This honour makes me even more determined to bring the belt back with me so that when I see the Queen I can tell her "I've got another one"  Then perhaps she will give me a knighthood," joked Jane

Couch faces Martin at last

22 May 2007

Jane Couch will take on American legend Christy Martin in Monaco in September in probably the biggest women's boxing contest ever to be held in Europe. Six time world champ Couch has always wanted to pit her wits against Martin but financial considerations and other contractual issues have always got in the way - until now.

It's the second of two big fights for Couch this year. First she will take on Jaime Clampitt in Rhode Island on 22nd June when the vacant IWBF light welterweight title will be up for grabs. Then on 22nd September she has her date with Martin who will be putting her WBC belt on the line.
